Bloomsburg University – activities for kids

We are so lucky to have Bloomsburg University as a resource in our community!  It can be a bit tricky to find out what is offered from their website, so below is our best shot at providing a comprehensive list of opportunities.  Please “leave a reply” below if you know of other activities that should be listed and we will include it!

Bloomsburg Sports Camps: https://www.buhuskiescamps.com/  Most of these camps run in the summer, and most of the camps are for ages 8+.  Camps currently include baseball, soccer, basketball, football, wrestling, women’s softball, field hockey, lacrosse and volleyball.

Bloomsburg University Quest Outdoor Adventure: http://quest.bloomu.edu/?page_id=7089   These camps are for children ages 8+ and are 9am-4pm for one week.  Excerpt from their website, “These are the most outdoor oriented, active, adventure oriented camps in the region. The goal for these camps is to keep your child  active and outdoors all day.  They will participate in a range of activities that Quest offers.  Each year we try to add new activities to the mix to keep it interesting for returning campers.  Each camp week is structured with same itinerary for each week which begins with the first day of team building (get-to-know one another), a water day of rafting/kayaking,  hiking, rock wall, high ropes/zip-line as well as many other team building activities. Your child will come home very tired each day.”

Bloomsburg University Swimming Lessons.  Lessons are typically held in April & May each year at the university pool and are coordinated by Bridget Hilferty (bhilfert@bloomu.edu).  A flyer comes out each year with the details and pricing, and you email Bridget to sign up.  The lessons are fantastic as the ratio of teacher to child is usually 1:1 or 1:2 for the younger kids.  The lessons are taught by swimmers on the University team, and ages taught are 2+ at the same time (so you can bring all of your kids to the same lesson time!)  If someone knows of a website link for more information, please let us know and we will include!

Bloomsburg University Mini Courses. https://intranet.bloomu.edu/ce/minicourse.   Phone: 570-389-5060.  Courses range from SAT prep to self defense for kids.  A number of the courses are taught by local facilities (example, Bloomsburg School of Dance has dance classes listed as a course), but some are unique to the university.

Bloomsburg University Girls in Sports Day.  In January 2020, Eric McCabe ( emccabe@bloomu.edu) coordinated a free basketball clinic in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day at the Nelson Field House.  Boys and girls, grades kindergarten through eighth, were invited to take part in the clinic hosted by the women’s basketball team which began at 10am.  A speed and agility clinic followed at 10:30.  At the conclusion of the clinics, there was an activities fair held with student-athletes hosted by the women’s teams at Bloomsburg University.  During the activities fair, participants were encouraged to interact with the student-athletes to learn more about their sport and being a college student-athlete.

Also, don’t forget to take your kids up to watch some games!  Think your child may be interested in tennis, swimming, football, field hockey, etc.?  Look up the game schedule at the following website: https://buhuskies.com/

Another local tip….take your kids up to the athletic fields in the summer.  You can walk around the track pushing a stroller, while the older kids run around in the infield!
