Established in 1919, Heller Orchards is a family owned and operated business specializing in a variety of fruit. Founded by Hoyt E. Heller, the orchard began on 20 acres of land in Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania. Hoyt got his start at Gettysburg College where he learned how to grow many types of apples. As the business flourished, he saw opportunities to sell locally, including A&P stores in the area. His success led him to open a retail store in Wapwallopen, Pa., which is still in operation today. […] The orchard now thrives as a member of the USDA’s Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) program. Heller Orchards is committed to providing a safe, healthy, and great-tasting product. We are proactive about implementing procedures to make a positive difference which is why we say, “We Grow Good Health.”
Thousands walked the grounds of Heller Orchards for the 30th annual Apple Festival held on the orchard’s grounds. Under sunny fall skies, they were treated to all things apple, including handmade goods from 70 vendors and an array of historic and educational attractions. The event started in 1988 as a fundraiser for two area churches, with the Heller family offering the groups to hold the festival on the grounds. Now, the event benefits roughly five area churches as well as several local first responder organizations. Children are able to be a part of history with several hands-on activities and fun games to win prizes. Greg and Andrea Heller decided to keep the historic and educational elements alive. They are appreciative and grateful to everyone who decides to come out every single year.
