Earth Day Origins

Every year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day, a holiday which was started in 1970 as an American-led environmental initiative that became a global phenomenon in 1990. Prior to Earth Day’s conception, there was much environmental turmoil in our country and internationally; huge, gas-guzzling cars, dirty industrial practices, and many other factors led to much pollution and environmental damage. Instituted by politicians and activists alike, Earth Day was the catalyst for the creation of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and many other much needed changes in the way people interacted with our earth and all its great resources. COMMUNITY GARDENS
Our local communities offer gardens if you would like to rent land or volunteer your time. The Bloomsburg Community Garden is located on Ferry Road, across from the Municipal Airport, and it costs $10-$20 for small and large plots for the season.
The Lewisburg Community Garden is more involved – one half of the land is rented to community members and the other half is cultivated by volunteers who grow organic produce for donations.  The Lewisburg Garden utilizes the parcel of land located at the intersection of North Water Street and St. Anthony Street (map).

START YOUR OWN HOME GARDEN
Gardening can be a wonderful and rewarding way to grow your own food and flowers, and is an amazing learning experience for adults and children alike. Whether you pot some plants on a porch, have a few garden beds, or even start some indoor herb or veggie plants, the options are endless and the benefits are huge!
