Vibrant Valentines: Creative Crafts for Kids

Vibrant Valentines: Creative Crafts for Kids

With cold and stormy weather outside, Valentine’s Day begs for indoor crafting fun. We sat down with a few of our favorite arts & crafts studios in our 5 counties to put together a vivid list of Valentine’s Day ideas! These projects are all fairly simple, and most likely only require things we would have in our own homes or can easily acquire. Most of these items can be purchased at places like Walmart, Michael’s, or Dollar Tree, and you can get creative with the materials you have at home!

The Art Grind (Danville): Valentine’s Day Scratch Offs

Supply List:

💘Cardstock (regular paper can be used but will wrinkle)
💘Sharpies/Gel Pens
💘Clear Packing Tape
💘Acrylic Paints
💘Scissors
💘Painting tool, sponge or brush
💘Plastic surface for packing tape to stick to

Instructions:

Step 1 – Cut paper into hearts or square/rectangle cards, you’ll also want to put a strip of packing tape onto the plastic (leave a little fold so you can peel it back later) to prepare for painting!
**This strip of tape can be cut into hearts, or certain shapes, or left as rectangle pieces to put over top of the words you’d like to be scratched off. You can also put the tape directly onto the card and paint over it there.

Step 2 – Start the first THIN layer of acrylic paint on the packing tape you had prepared. Write on your cards/hearts what you want to be scratched off, i.e. “be mine” “will you be my valentine” or you can give out scratch offs to your loved ones that say one free “hug.”

Step 3 – Once the tape is dry, add another thin layer of paint or you can grab some unused packing tape, and place the tape over the words you’d like to scratch off!

Step 4 – Go ahead and thinly paint directly on the tape on the card – these can be messy, you can even paint the entire card if you’d like too. Add another layer of paint to the tape we’ve been painting!

Step 5 – Once the tape we’ve been painting is dry, you can go ahead and carefully cut out shapes, or strips to place over the words on your card that you’d like to be hidden. This method is great for ‘lottery’ scratch offs (but with a valentines day theme)!

Step 6 – Add another layer to card if you can see the word under the paint, keep adding thin layers until it is hidden.

Final – Once everything is dry, add the final touches, ‘To’ and ‘From’, cut the cards if you’d like or add extra decorations and details to the cards! Once you’re happy with the result, go ahead and give it to your sweetheart!

Jot & Tittle Studios (Bloomsburg): DIY Fabric-Poked Heart Decoration

This no-sew craft is great for older kids. Adult supervision recommended, as the stick is sharp!

Supply List:

💘7-inch Styrofoam heart (from Dollar Tree) (Smaller Styrofoam pieces would also work well!)
💘1-inch fabric squares, in any color and pattern
💘Wooden skewer or similar poking tool.
💘Ribbon (for hanging)
💘Fabric Scissors or rolling cutter & cutting mat

Instructions:

Step 1 – Cut fabric into 1-inch squares. You can use a mix of colors and patterns if you’d like!

Step 2 – Take one fabric square at a time and position it on the Styrofoam heart. Using a wooden skewer, gently poke the center of the fabric square into the Styrofoam, pushing it in about halfway. The fabric will fold in and create a fluffy textured effect.

Step 3 – Repeat step 2, placing fabric squares close together to cover the entire surface of the Styrofoam.  The holes do not have to be so close to each other, as the fabric will still cover it. You can go back to fill in empty spaces as needed.

Step 4 – To hang your decoration, cut a piece of ribbon to your desired length. Use the skewer to create a small hole at the top of the heart, then push both ends of the ribbon into the hole. Secure with a dab of glue if needed.

Step 5 – Hang and enjoy, or give as a gift!

Valentine’s Teacher Gift

Flowers always brighten one’s day so I thought a small bouquet would be cute for a teacher gift. To make it even more sweet I had the kids paint XOXO’s on a recycled paper grocery bag. I love to mix and match small batches of flowers from the grocery store. Remember this doesn’t need to be a big bouquet just sweet and simple.”

Supply List:
💘Brown paper grocery bag
💘Black paint
💘Paintbrush
💘Tape
💘Flowers (pink, red, purple, white)
💘Ribbon, tissue paper, & optional tag

Instructions: Cut a 12 x 12″ piece out of brown bag. Paint xoxox until sheet is full. Let dry. Add a few stems together. (I like to add a damp paper towel around stem ends and then tie a plastic baggie around that to keep flowers alive). Place on tissue paper and brown paper and wrap them up! Tape to secure paper. Ribbon and tag optional. (I love ribbon from Michael’s and there are so many print at home tags on Etsy.)

Valentine’s Classmate Gift: Hugs & Kisses Valentines

Oh how I love these little love letters filled with hugs and kisses. A fun and simple craft for classroom valentines. They are so easy and cute!

Supply List:
💘Heart-shaped paper doilies
💘Heart stickers
💘Tape
💘Hershey’s Hugs & Kisses and/or other small treats

Instructions: Take heart and flip so point is at top. Fold sides in towards middle and crease. Next fold the bottom about 1/3-1/2 way up and crease. I did put a piece of tape between folds to keep it together better. Fill with hugs +kisses, other sweet treats, stickers, notes. Fold down bottom piece to finish envelope and seal with a heart sticker. Doilies and stickers can be found at Dollar Tree, Michael’s, and Walmart.

The Creative Space (Selinsgrove): “Love” Hanger

Here is a Valentine’s Day craft that you can make with craft supplies you might already have at home! I also added a few cute accessories that I found at Hobby Lobby.

Supply List:

💘6″ popsicle sticks
💘Paint (using gold here, but choose any color you like)
💘Paintbrush
💘Cardboard
💘Yarn
💘Scissors
💘Hot Glue
💘Wooden “Love” cutout
💘Stickers or other decorations

Instructions:

Step 1 – Glue 8 popsicle sticks together. Using hot glue, run a bead between each stick. Glue one stick to cover each side of the exposed ends. (This creates a more solid structure as well as making it look nice!)

Step 2 – Paint! (I used a soft gold).

Step 3 – Use a piece of cardboard to make a heart. Start by cutting a piece of cardboard to fit inside the sign and then draw and cut out the heart.

Step 4 – Choose two colors of yarn and wrap around the heart till its entirely covered. If this is difficult because the yarn slips, you can attach a few of the first wraps with hot glue so the yarn has something to hang onto as you keep wrapping. (If your piece of cardboard is too bendy, you can glue a small popsicle stick to the back to give it structure).

Step five: Put it all together. Attach a piece of twine to the back top corners with hot glue to make the hanger. Then glue the word and yarn heart to the front. (I used a big dollop of glue to get the heart well attached!)

Bluebird Atelier (Lewisburg): Shaving Cream Marbled Paper Hearts

An all ages Valentine’s Day craft that combines sensory fun and colorful art play, using common household supplies. When you’re finished, you can decorate them as handmade Valentines, use a hole punch and string to make a Valentine’s garland, or use them in a collage piece!

Supply List:

💘Shaving cream
💘Watercolor paper or cardstock, cut into heart shapes of any size
💘Liquid watercolors, food coloring, or tempera paint
💘A craft stick or toothpick
💘A rectangular piece of cardboard, about 4″x3″
💘A large, flat plate or tray (a baking sheet works well)
💘Pipette, paintbrush, or spoon

Instructions:

Step 1 – Spray a thick layer of shaving cream onto a plate or tray. Spread the shaving cream out to the size of the paper that you want to marble.
Step 2 – Add a few drops of colors of your choice to different areas of the shaving cream using a pipette, paintbrush or spoon to drip the color on top. Drag a craft stick or toothpick back and forth in the shaving cream a number of times until the desired marbled effect is achieved.
Step 3 – Place the paper heart on top of the marbled shaving cream, pressing it in gently so that the entire surface of the paper is touching the shaving cream. Pull the paper heart out of the shaving cream and place it on a flat surface (that can get messy).
Step 4 – Use the cardboard rectangle to scrape the shaving cream off of the paper. A marbled paint effect will be left behind on the paper. Allow the paint to dry for 1 hour before adding further decoration to the heart, if desired.
