Restoring Dignity Through Donations- DIG Furniture Bank

Restoring Dignity Through Donations- DIG Furniture Bank

Spring has finally sprung, and its a great time to clear out the old and welcome in the new! We love a good cleaning session- and a good purge- to get ready for a new season and declutter your life. If you’re wondering what to do with those nice items you no longer need, but would still do another family a lot of good, we’ve got a great solution. We sat down with our friend, Emily Gorski, founder and Executive Director at DIG Furniture Bank (in Milton), to learn more about their amazing non-profit, including the services and items they offer, how to donate, and other great ways to get involved. Read on to learn more!

What is DIG?

DIG Furniture Bank is a private, locally-born 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that restores dignity and promotes stability by redirecting gently used furniture and household items to local families in need at no cost. DIG was founded in 2020 from an observed gap of services in our Central PA region. Their name is inspired simply by the first three letters of the word “dignity”, as this is a cornerstone value in what we believe these items can bring to our clientele. “The concept is much like a food bank, but only for furniture and household goods. While each furniture bank is different, we all have one thing in common: we believe that there is enough for everybody.

DIG works in close partnership with other local agencies, known as Referral Agencies, that refer their clients to DIG for furnishings. Clients that are referred to DIG are typically in transition from a significant life change, including but not limited to fleeing domestic violence, recovering from substance use, moving into housing after experiencing homelessness, and being released from incarceration. More often than not, DIG clients are in need of everything to make a house a home; gratefully, DIG can address this need through donations from the community.

What Items Does DIG Accept?

DIG accepts a wide variety of furniture and household items, from large items like couches, dining tables, and dressers to smaller items like microwaves, dishes and silverware, and artwork. A full list of everything they accept and do not accept can be found here. Donors can request a drop off appointment time at here. Their biggest request is that donated items are in good condition, free of rips, stains, odors, and pet hair, so that they can uphold their mission.

How To Get Involved

As a young nonprofit organization, DIG also relies on the financial contributions of our community. More information about financial donations can be found here. DIG gratefully accepts financial donations in any form that you are most comfortable with. To learn more about our giving programs, please contact Emily Gorski.

There are so many ways to get involved with DIG – by donating your gently used furnishings, donating funds, or donating your time through volunteering. They would love to meet you!
